Most people know whether they are either ‘male’ or ‘female’. But for some the situation is not so clear. Whether for biological or psychological reasons, they have a problem clearly identifying their gender. In which case, and with medical help, a choice is usually made to be one gender or the other. Anyone faced with that ‘male’ or ‘female’ choice should never be denied compassionate support and understanding by all concerned.

But judging by news items, websites and magazine articles, the concept of ‘male’ and ‘female’ seems to be rapidly disappearing. The media and various activist groups now insist that everybody has the right to choose their gender. This campaign promotes ‘gender fluidity’ and discards traditional definitions and social norms. Rather than accept the traditional, Bible-based view, some have even preferred to rewrite the Bible removing any ‘gender bias’. Some even suggest that their gender identity can be a choice they are entitled to make differently each day!

A radical campaign.

This ‘gender fluidity’ campaign is seen by many as a very real threat to the stability of society. This notion of a flexible gender-choice poses significant problems. And such problems are not limited to how an envelope should be addressed.

Faced with this campaign, in 2014 the social media company Facebook began offering users more than 50 choices to describe their identity in their personal profile. But after receiving complaints that this was not enough, it now allows users to express their ‘unique gender identity’ using their own words. Similarly, those opening a bank account may now find themselves with a bewildering choice of which ‘title’ to preface their name.

But where does this trend eventually lead? Where does it stop? Are there going to be any ‘boundaries’ that cannot be crossed by such thinking? And how will traditional views regarding ‘male’ and ‘female’ be adequately heard amid the clamour of those campaigning for radical change. Judging by recent reports, businesses, charities and even schools are already facing difficult challenges dealing with this issue, from both sides of the argument.

Falsely accused!

Unfortunately, anyone saying this campaign lacks logic, or has harmful consequences, risks being falsely accused of bigotry, or of being homophobic or a religious extremist. No distinction is made between those who have an objection on religious or other moral grounds and those who object on the basis of hatred or a desire to abuse.

It seems that the world has lost its moral compass. The situation is a complete mess, and it will surely end in disaster for this and any subsequent generations.

The only answer

All this confusion comes about when we ignore a very simple Bible statement:

“When God created mankind, he made them in the likeness of God. He created them male and female and blessed them. And he named them “Mankind” when they were created.” (Genesis 5:1-2 NIV)

Mankind has many faults and problems, most of his or her own making, but they should never be blamed on our creator. Even when facing very difficult and very personal decisions, surely all of us need to refer back to the Bible – the ‘Handbook’ written by our creator to help us all. According to God the only choice is male or female.

But if we accept the Bible as our guide, we can all look forward to a totally different world in the future, ruled over by Jesus Christ. We are told that in that world-wide kingdom all the problems and differences based on race and gender will be removed. It’s described in these words:

“There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:27-28 NIV)

But to have a place in the perfect world that’s coming soon we need to believe the Bible and be baptised into Jesus Christ right now!
