You don’t often see them and you certainly don’t hear them as they fly over your head at night. And for some people, the thought of holding one sends a shiver down their spine! But, for all of us, they probably live nearby and if they decide to live in your roof you may have an unwelcome problem.

Bats!!

But like them or not, bats are truly marvellous creatures. In his book “Claxton – Field notes from a small planet”, the naturalist Mark Crocker has this to say about how bats hunt their prey:

“(Bats) echo-location system is one of those truths that outdoes fiction. Bats blast their surroundings with a machine-gun fire of high-frequency pulses then wait for the rebounded calls, which are unscrambled in the bat brain as information on the relative distances and contours of an environment. Essentially they’re hearing the appearance of a place. The system is so sensitive they can detect and avoid a wire the thickness of a human hair. They can identify an insect – and judge its edibility – by the way their echoes curve around it. One is flabbergasted not just by the idea of a world sculpted by voice, but by the inner labyrinth of the bat’s neurological system, which allows the creature a flight of such intricate convolutions when effectively blind.”

Perhaps you are flabbergasted too?!

Works of fiction?

Two Victorian authors, Charles Darwin and Charles Dickens, wrote some famous books that are still read today. Dickens wrote fictional stories, whereas Darwin wrote about his observations and conclusions as a Victorian scientist. Fortunately, with the passage of time and increased scientific knowledge, many people no longer consider Darwin’s Theory of Evolution to be accurate. Even at the time he wrote his books, Darwin himself had his doubts!

Dickens used his observations of the world he lived in to help him create his stories. Similarly, Darwin was using the scientific knowledge of his day when he developed his Theory. Since then our world has changed out of all recognition, including tremendous scientific and technological advances. Even Darwin’s Theory of Evolution has been changed since Victorian times.

No change!

But the bat’s echo-location system hasn’t changed!

Many people now accept without question that such marvels of ‘natural technology’ happened accidentally. But now that we know so much more about the complexity of living things than Darwin did, surely any theory of evolution, that says all living things came about by chance, is simply a work of fiction!

Although the Bible isn’t a scientific textbook, the truths it contains haven’t changed. On page after page, from Genesis to Revelation, it weaves together geographical, historical and archaeological facts that support its opening words:

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1 ESV)

All change!!

Above all, the Bible contains ‘good news’ about dramatic events soon to happen that will change this world for ever.

No longer subject to wars, violence, poverty, famines, or even climate change! But a world that – in the end, as at the beginning – gives glory to its Creator.

“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away…(God) will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” (Revelation 21:1,4 ESV)

If that seems like ‘good news’ to you too, take another look at God’s Creation and how a fact like the bat’s echo-location system “outdoes fiction”. Now’s the time to ‘read’ the facts for yourself, not rely on an outdated theory.

If you think the Bible is outdated, think again. And it’s far ‘better than fiction’, because God wrote it!
