In a recent article for The Guardian newspaper, Prof.Stephen Hawking made the following statement:

“We are at the most dangerous moment in the development of humanity. We now have the technology to destroy the planet on which we live, but have not yet developed the ability to escape it.” (The Guardian 02/12/16)

Reflecting on recent changes in UK and US politics, he expressed the view that the “widening economic inequality around the world”, together with “the economic consequences of globalisation and accelerating technological change” will continue to push our world towards disaster. Knowing that we also face “awesome environmental challenges”, he called on us all to work together to protect our world.

Working together

In his article, Prof.Hawking offered his view of what needs to be done to reverse this dangerous trend in human affairs. In his words,

  • One united people: “We need to break down, not build up, barriers within and between nations.”
  • New leadership: “The world’s leaders need to acknowledge that they have failed and are failing many.”
  • Natural resources: “With resources increasingly concentrated in the hands of a few, we are going to have to learn to share far more than at present.”
  • New world order: “We must help people to retrain for a new world and support them financially while they do so.”

As a self-declared “optimist for my species”, Prof.Hawkins called for a greater measure of humility to be shown by those leading and governing our world, to take these world-saving actions now!

What the Bible says

When the Bible was written, this “most dangerous moment in the development of humanity” was a long way off. Despite that fact, it anticipated the state of our world right now and recorded God’s solution to our current problems well in advance.

For example, look how closely the following verses address the problems Prof.Hawkins identified:

  • One united people

Using the nation of Israel as an example, the prophet Ezekiel predicts a time when all the world will be united:-

“And I will give them one heart, and a new spirit I will put within them. I will remove the heart of stone from their flesh and give them a heart of flesh, that they may walk in my statutes and keep my rules and obey them. And they shall be my people, and I will be their God. “ (Ezekiel 11:19-20 ESV)

  • New leadership

There are many references in the Bible to the establishment of a single world government, led by Jesus Christ as its king, that will replace all the existing rulers and governments:-

“…the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever.” Daniel 2:44 NKJV)

  • Natural resources

The equal distribution and abundance of resources will satisfy all the world’s population. It’s worth reading all of Psalm 72 to get a picture of the blessings this new world order will bring, but this verse gives a flavour of what is to come:-

“There will be an abundance of grain in the earth, on the top of the mountains…” (Psalm 72:16 NKJV)

  • New world order

With wars, violence, famine and poverty regularly filling the news, God’s gift of peace and plenty is something we will all welcome:-

“They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore. But everyone shall sit under his vine and under his fig tree, and no one shall make them afraid.” (Micah 4:3-4 NKJV)

Even though humanity may indeed be “at the most dangerous moment” in history, by being baptised we relate ourselves to God’s promises and have a real hope for the future. Only the Bible offers us all a certain and sure way of escape!

Why not take it now?
